Through the rock-face, beyond a hand-built tunnel, a kelp forest sways in a historic turquoise cove.

A wide, modestly-graded, switchback trail will carry us down to the water’s edge, through a hand-built tunnel that Big Sur’s early settlers built to access ships moored in the cove. Groves of redwoods grow beside a creek rushing between boulders into the open ocean. Tide-pools contain tiny kingdoms of anemones and hermit crabs, while a grander, and more mysterious, world lies beneath the waves that crash against the cliffs. Perhaps a diving otter, or spouting whale, will share with us some of the secrets of Big Sur’s wild coast.
